Self-portrait Vincent van Gogh After Van Gogh had heard from his brother Theo about the new colorful French painting, Vincent went to live in Paris in 1886. He soon tried out the French style in a number of self-portraits. He did this mainly to save the costs for a model. Here he painted himself as a mundane dressed Parisian, with loose, rhythmic brushstrokes in striking colors. The original work is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
